In some strange and indescribable way, she and Margrethe grew up together. When Nelly became a maid of the household, the lord of the house was still alive, she was fourteen, it was her first position in any house. Margrethe, too, was fourteen. They could have been sisters, except they weren't, they were maid and mistress. Then, the lord of the house died, leaving her at the mercy of the mother, the lady of the house, mrs. Clemmensen, and of Margrethe who begged her not to get rid of Nelly, please, please, pretty please. So, Nelly stayed. She stayed with Margrethe and when Margrethe wanted to run off to Copenhagen to study at the Royal Theatre despite her mother's explicit opposition, Nelly ran off with her, served her in the small apartment she had rented, made her food, made her bed, made her laugh. Margrethe has a beautiful laugh. Nelly would die for her, smiling. Sometimes she wonders, if that will really be necessary. If it won't be, in the end.
